College Musings

Posted by admin On May - 8 - 2009

Just in case any of you readers actually care about the personal lives of me and Koolaid, I thought I would share with you the fact that I was accepted to, and am going to be attending Champlain College in Burlington, VT starting in August 2009.

I can’t believe just a year ago I had no idea what school I wanted to go to, and no idea how to choose. I recall filling out the CollegeBoard school profiler that would help me narrow down my schools, and not even knowing whether I wanted a big school or a small one, urban or rural.

Luckily for me I looked at Champlain, because it was perfect for me. It’s a great tiny school, and they like to keep it that way. They reject more people than most schools merely to keep their population really low (about 5,000 students total.) That’s the reason I applied early decision, because I knew that the school was where I NEEDED to be, and I would have to get in my application as soon as I could to beat out other students.

I seriously can’t wait to be there, as I absolutely love the area right on Lake Champlain, as well as the school itself. Everything about Burlington fits my personality perfectly. I was always the kind of person who loved nature and climbed trees, but at the same time I loved city life as well and the idea of bustling streets. Burlington is like a little city situated right in the mountains on the side of Lake Champlain. I can get all the night life and liveliness of a city and then drive 10 minutes out and be in the middle of the northeastern Adirondack Mountains.

Another great thing about the school is that you receive a free year-round pass to Sugarbush, a ski resort about 30 minutes away from Burlington. I used to ski, and the first and only time I tried snowboarding I broke my wrist. Unlike most people that would avoid snowboarding like the plague after breaking something their first time, I find a NEED to try it again. It’s almost like a challenge for me that I failed the first time and need to overcome. My parents are urging me not to go snowboarding again. Ha, fat chance! Especially with a free pass like this.

I have also had a chance to talk with my roomate Zack via AIM (we chose each other, not the school’s doing) and he seems like a really great person. I can’t wait to meet him IRL. We tried to get together in Vermont recently but he couldn’t hitch a ride up and had to work anyways.

Oh, and just in case you couldn’t figure it out by the plethora of websites I own, yes I will be majoring in Web Development and Design there.

On a side note, Vermont is known for its coffee, along with it’s maple syrup. Green Mountain Coffee comes straight from Vermont, as well as a lot of other brands. Any of my friends will vouch for me about my coffee addiction. As I type this I’m sipping on some beans that I brought all the way from Vermont back home with me to New Jersey (5.5 hour ride btw.) More specifically, these beans are known as “Red Eye Roast” and are just about the darkest beans I’ve ever seen. This along with the touch of espresso mingled into the blend, and I’m pretty sure it would be more effective at starting a heart than a defibrillator.

Anyways, I’ll let Koolaid tell you about his college if he wants to. I wouldn’t want to talk about it on his behalf. Honestly I would have no idea what to say. People throw around the names of so many colleges right now that its hard to even remember what state most of them are in, not to mention specific details about them.

I think of myself as a bit of a photog, and have attached a few images I took from Burlington so you guys get an idea of where I’m headed.
